about

‘Nosferatu’ or ‘The Curious Case of Jonathan Harker’ A contemporary dance drama in 3 acts.
I’ve always been a bit of a balletomane – a quiet passion which led me to review ballet releases for ‘Classic CD’ magazine in the early ‘90s – but I had never entertained the idea of writing one. However, after creating a new soundtrack for a silent film in 2008, I was confident and keen to attempt something more ‘serious’. So, when Max ‘the macher’ Marchini invited me to join his new label, Dark Companion, in 2015 and record some of my older songs with an orchestra, I immediately offered to write a piece specially for them. I subsequently composed the 30 minute ‘A Grimm Fantasy For Orchestra’ and a string quartet, transcribing the parts I had recorded on a keyboard with the assistance and encouragement of a professional composer.
He subsequently wrote variations on a theme from my song ‘Nosferatu’ (one of my more theatrical pieces) for four-handed piano which gave me the idea that we might collaborate on a ballet, but the pandemic interfered with that and being an impatient fellow, I determined to write and record the entire ballet myself before time reduced me to a shadow of that debauched aristocrat.
So, here it is, the culmination of three months intense work which can be listened to as an album or - hopefully – played in a dark theatre while dancers enact the tragedy of a man who might have inspired Bram Stoker to pen his gothic novel and, unwittingly, beget a host of ungodly children of the night.
As the subtitle suggests, the ballet is centred not on the count but on his alleged victim, Jonathan Harker, whose fevered imagination recasts the aged aristocrat as a vampire. The events recounted in Bram Stoker’s gothic novel are now a fantasy experienced in Harker’s mind which makes this ballet fundamentally different from the rival ‘Dracula’ ballets (almost all of which use classical music and not an original score).
