about

A home demo of a track on the 18 song double album 'Brighton Rock' based on the novel by Graham Greene. A taster or trailer, if you prefer, for the 'coming attraction' as they used to say in the cinema.

lyrics

“Hello Fred,” the thin youth said
“Hello Fred,” the thin youth said. “I knew you’d crawl back in the end. So, you ain’t forgotten your old friends?”
“Hello Fred,” the thin youth said. “You got a nerve. You got some gall. Seems you got some bottle after all.”
“You’re Fred alright and no mistake. You gone milky? Got the shakes?
“Hello Fred,” the thin youth said again.

“Hello Fred,” the thin youth said. “you got some nerve, you got some gall to show your face round here after all.”
“Sorry, you’re mistaken, son. I tell you straight. I’m not the one.
No, really. You got the wrong idea. I’m not your pal, I’m not from round here.”

He was, Fred thought, too young to shave as he toyed with a pack of razor blades,
slit it open, drew out one and stroked the cruel edge with his thumb.

“Pinky, of course I’m Fred. Just kidding round,” he said.
“I would never squeal on you. Have I ever lied to you?
I swear on my mother’s eyes. Cross my heart and hope to die.”
“Listen, Pinky you can have the prize, five guineas.” But callous eyes
glared back in mute disgust. “No, Fred, you’ve lost my trust.

Can’t be letting the likes of you, make me look small, as if I’m through
You have to pay, like Judas, see. That wretch what topped hisself from a tree.
Now drink up, chum you ain’t touched your gin.”
He knew then they meant to murder him.
