When I Was Young

There was a man who lived alone grey wisps of hair and brittle bones
Pencil thin he was too, just skin and gristle through and through,
He went about with such an air, bemoaning this and that affair
and did profess himself aggrieved, cruel deluded and deceived

I only hope that I can avoid becoming this old man

Once upon a time when I was young when all my songs were still unsung

I knew a man who lived alone, dry as a stick and grey as stone
Now it was said and likely true, he’d misunderstood or misconstrued
And did profess himself aggrieved, for he was wont to take his leave
Of this cruel world with no regret for sure it would disappoint him yet

I can only hope I can avoid becoming this old man

Once upon a time when I was young when all my songs were still unsung,

Time stood still or so it seemed while he did linger as in a dream
A life of leisure and of ease each day he did just as he pleased.
He looked down as if on high upon the teeming throng that passed him by
Would I were the man that I could be, would I were that man, said he

I only hope I can avoid becoming this old man
